Ferrari Racing: Beginnings of Ferrari Greatness on the Track

The first rumblings of the sports car and luxury car phenomenon that would become Ferrari started in 1929 with Enzo Ferrari and his elite team of racers. Ferrari and his team dominated the track in the 1930s, and he would eventually go on to produce his own cars. Still, the name Ferrari would not get adopted until 1945. Under the name Ferrari, work began on a powerful new V12 engine that would lend its incredible strength to a model dubbed the Ferrari 125 S. The Ferrari 125 S, a race car, would go on to become the Ferrari brand's first model in 1947.

A Running Start

The Ferrari 125 S quickly accumulated notable wins in the racing world, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1949 and the Carrera Panamericana in 1951. High-profile wins like these would help to cement Ferrari as an automaker that could be trusted to craft high-quality vehicles. Ferrari would then go on to create even more related road cars, including the 250 GT Coupé, the Ferrari brand's first series produced car.

The automaker eventually began to shake up its traditional method of building cars by diversifying the lineup and offering a wider range of options. The 1960s saw the arrival of the mid-engine Ferrari Dino 206 GT and the modernized Ferrari 365 GTB/4.
